Apocalypse Then and Now

2010

In the six channel video installation Apocalypse Then and Now, two towers of televisions feature iconic war films from different cinematic eras, one stack playing the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, the other playing The Hurt Locker from 2008. The screens face the wall and all that can be seen of the pictorial content is a reflected coronal glow. Unburdened by detail and specificity, this glow provides a visually reductive comparison of the two films and compares the intrinsic visual aesthetics of the armed conflicts that are the subjects of the two films. These aesthetics are differentiated by color palette according to geography, historical consequence, and the military's need to blend in with its surroundings.
